migraine picture_103109_v1Going healthy is all the buzz these days.  Words like organic, pure, all-natural, whole wheat and fat free are the rage among people who want to eat more sensibly.

The same approach is used by some parents whose children suffer from migraines.  They are more inclined to try natural migraine remedies over medicines to give their kids some relief.  Below are some tips for the concerned parents:

Rest

Have your child sleep in a dark and quiet room at the onset of a migraine.  Place a cool cloth over their forehead.  Prompt your kids to go to bed early.  most times, sleep eases a migraine.

Learn to cope with stress

Despite their young age, children also face stress.  Pressure may come from school, social relationships, friends, family and the like.  As parents, you can help your kids cope.  One, learn to relax either through yoga, regular exercise or muscle relaxation techniques.  Two, read books or listen to tapes on relieving stress.  Three, see a therapist for advice on stress management.  In a study, two-thirds of the children who availed of materials on stress alleviation had lower headache incidences.  Likewise, half of the children who saw a therapist had improved conditions.

Identify the migraine triggers

It is plausible that your kids’ diet may be what is giving them the migraine.  Though the link hasn’t been conclusively established, it’s probably best to avoid ingesting foods and drinks which precede the attack.  Make your children keep a diary of what they consume on a daily basis.  Note down the days when the attack occurred.  This might help isolate and identify a trigger that sets off the migraine.  Some popular food triggers are caffeine, aged cheese, nuts and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG).

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a technique that teaches an individual to regulate their bodily functions, like temperature and blood flow, to deal with pain or for relaxation purposes.  However, training is needed for children to effectively utilize this procedure.

There are many natural migraine remedies out there for children’s migraine.  Just do your research and always consult a physician.

migraine picture_103009_v1If parents can shield their children from migraine pain, they would, in a heartbeat.  It is always agonizing for parents to see their kids wrenching in pain.  But take heart, you can do something for them.  Before reading on, an important caveat, ALWAYS consult your doctor before giving your children any medication.  Below are some ideas that might help.

Sumatriptan

Sumatriptan belongs to a group of drugs called triptans.  Triptans remedy migraines and headaches by constricting the blood vessels. Imigran is the brand name of Sumatriptan and may be taken at the onset of a headache.  Sumatriptan comes in tablet form for older children and nasal spray for the younger ones.  The tablet form is not recommended for those under 18 years old, except only as prescribed by a physician.  Though the tablet is effective for adults, not much research has been done to determine its efficacy on children’s migraine.  Nasal spray is advised for children 12 and above and is likewise obtainable via prescription.  Studies show that 65% of children who took the spray experienced less pain while 40% felt completely better.  Possible side effects of the drug are dizziness, weakness, drowsiness, feeling hot and nose irritation.

Paracetamol

Paracetamol is a common painkiller and are usually in tablet form.  Parents can dissolve the tablet for easier dispensing.  Better yet, give younger children the liquid pain killer Calpol. Though the effectiveness of paracetamol in kids isn’t backed up by studies, it’s nevertheless prescribed by doctors to alleviate children’s migraine. Be wary with dispensing the right dosage for your child.  Taking too much may lead to severe liver damage or worse, cause more headaches.

Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs

Ibuprofen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are also pain killers.  Calprofen is a liquid ibuprofen for kids who can’t swallow a pill. Diclofenac, an NSAID, are available over-the-counter for children over 14.  Most NSAIDs are available only with prescription.  Though NSAIDs are suitable for adults, it hasn’t been proven helpful for children. Nonetheless, it is sometimes recommended for kids.  NSAID can sometimes instigate an upset stomach in kids or worsen asthma.

headache pictureAdults often think that children don’t have a care in the world.  Images of kids frolicking in the sun and giggling their hearts out make the grown-ups green with envy.  But children do face stress, pressure, anxiety and unfortunately, illness, just like everyone else.  One such condition that afflicts both the young ones and adults are migraines.

Not many are aware that children’s migraine is a reality kids are confronted with.  Though statistics vary, about 5-10% of children (aged 5-15) experience migraines during their childhood and up to 25% in adolescent females.  During the high school years, approximately 20% of the adolescents endure migraines.  Unfortunately for the girls, they are more predisposed to have the headaches than the boys.

A migraine is normally an excruciating pounding headache accompanied by nausea that occurs from time to time. The pulsing pain generally starts in the forehead, the side of the head or around the eye area.  Gradually, the headache will progress and become more intense.  Vomiting, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise are fairly common occurrences.  Sometimes, an “aura” or shadows in their vision is experienced at the onset of the headache.

The exact cause of migraines is still unknown.  However, there are several assumptions proffered by the scientific community.  Probable causes are as strong odours, fatigue, depression, change in sleep patterns, skipping meals, hormonal changes, heredity, intense physical exertion and diet.  Common food triggers include processed meat, aged cheese, excessive caffeine intake, chocolates and beans.  Work closely with your child to identify the food triggers through the process of elimination.

Below are some helpful tips parents can make their kids do the ease their children’s migraine:

  • Get 8-10 hours of sleep at night
  • Drink 4-8 glasses of water
  • Eat a balanced and sensible diet
  • Steer clear of food triggers
  • Exercise regularly
  • Preventive medicine prescribed by your doctor
  • Rest in quiet and dark place

3 natural migraine headache treatmentsA word of caution: Though these natural migraine headache treatments are proven and incidentally complement each other, none of them should be used to replace any prescribed medication from your doctor. They can however, be used along with it, to bring relief faster.

1. Dark Room Therapy - the moment you know an impending attack on your head is about to emerge, find the darkest and most quiet spot in your home and lay down there.

Make sure the area is relatively warm so it can allow you to relax faster. Your eyes should be covered, but remain open (you’d need a long handkerchief or a scarf to do this job). Experience proves that shutting your eyes uses more facial and jaw muscles and will just increase your pain.

2. Relaxed Breathing - another natural migraine headache treatment that can be used in conjunction with dark room therapy is this one. Usually, a migraine brings on some sort of anxiety as well to you. Because you know how much it’s going to hurt, your heart rate has a tendency to increase, followed by an increase in blood flow which makes your problem complicated and worse.

3. Lavender Oil Treatment - the final step to this natural migraine headache treatment is to use lavender oil. It is cheap and very much safe to use. However, be reminded that you should only use pure lavender oil and never trade quality. Simple lavender scented fragrances or scented oils are just useless. Simply inhaling the purest form of it almost helps ease the pain immediately.

natural migraine headache treatments 04No two people are alike. That’s why if you’re looking for a natural migraine headache treatment, you should always try combinations and never stop experimenting until you find the one that works best for you. Again, nothing works for everyone and you’re uniquely you.

So along with the things that you have previously learned, the real key is to keep on learning – and applying – until you find the most fitting solution for your case.

Also keep in mind that migraines cannot be completely cured. But they can be managed well during the course of your lifetime, allowing you to live a well-balanced and meaningful life.

Natural migraine headache treatments can help you ease the pain you’re feeling, as long as they’re not a substitute to what your doctor has prescribed you, or until you are given the “go signal” or you are fully confident that you can do away with your synthetic meds. In the meantime, combining both ways of treatment may give you an upper hand on how to deal with your situation.

Finally, look for home remedies. You don’t have to keep on spending a ton load of money on Mr. Big Pharma, when what can help you may just be hiding around the corners of your house. Ask for answers, seek for solutions and never stop exploring and giving up hope.

toradolSpecialists give migraine  sufferers prescribed drugs to lessen the incidence or length of their headaches, and some to prevent the pain when they believe a headache coming on.  Now and again, though, the pain is impervious and heavy-duty pain prescribed drugs are indispensable.

Non-prescription NSAIDs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, help a lot of people reduce their migraine pain, but when they are not adequate in amount, professionals may suggest a prescription version.  Toradol (ketorolac) is a prescription-strength NSAID experts can hand out to migraine  sufferers with moderate to severe pain that is not reacting to other pain relievers.  It is obtainable in a tablet form, but is typically dispensed in emergency rooms and injected for migraines

Toradol has several potentially injurious side effects patients should to be informed of and must be utilized  with prudence.  It can cause queasiness, tiredness, faintness, itching, diarrhea, fluid retention, and perforation or bleeding of the gastrointestinal tract.

It should not be taken by migraine  sufferers who are allergic to other NSAIDs or aspirin.  Patients with a prior incident of gastrointestinal bleeding, high blood pressure, or a history of kidney and liver conditions should stay away from ketorolac.  It should be avoided by pregnant women and the elderly as well.

Patients who have been unproductively seeking to remedy their migraine at home with over the counter NSAIDs need to let their physician or emergency room personnel know.  Ketorolac should not be doled out until other NSAIDs have cleared the body to thwart potential overdose-related obstacles.

Due to potentially dangerous drug interactions, patients need to let their physicians know about all their drugs, not just ones taken for migraines.  Toradol should not be meted out to anyone currently taking blood thinners, tranquilizers, diuretics, lithium, and identifiable types of antidepressants, methotrexate, or ACE inhibitors for blood pressure.

Toradol may supply relief when no relief from the pain can be felt, but should be taken with tremendous carefulness.

ManFluDM_228x368The judicious application of heat in painful areas of their head is often employed by people who are suffering from migraines.

This type of pain relief treatment is very popular with people trying to avoid using commercial pain killers to deal with pain. Mothers who don’t want their kids to get used to pain killers also favour this method.

What are described here in this article are a few techniques that any migraine sufferer can immediately use. Not all of this techniques will work for all patients. In fact, some migraine sufferers find more comfort in having cold applied to wherever there is pain in their bodies. Many though really favour heat when it comes to pain abatement.

Determine the point in your head where the pain is most intense. This is the spot where you should apply a compress either hot or cold. The usual spot where the pain is most severe is either the temple or the front of the ear.

Some migraine sufferers complain that they often feel a stabbing pain in the back of the eye. To deal with this kind of pain, patients are advised to apply either a warm or cool damp cloth over the eyes. This technique also eases the discomfort for people who experiences phono-sensitivity.

You can also try to direct either hot or cold water to your head when you take a shower. Another method is to either to take a hot or cold bath. You can enhance this technique with the addition of aromatherapy techniques.

If you can’t decide between hot and cold then you can alternate using hot and cold cloths on the most painful part of your head. You can even use hot and cold treatments simultaneously. For example, you can soak your feet in hot water while at the same time applying cold compress on your head.

Natural Migraine Treatments.11The help designed to alleviate our headaches are what triggers rebound headaches — pain medication. So basically, it becomes a judgement of suffer now, or suffer later.

Rebound headaches are usually daily episodes, beginning early in the morning. Rebound headaches can lead to other setbacks including apprehension, melancholy, irritability and restlessness.

Prescribed drugs

Migraine prescriptions drive to boost serotonin levels to relieve pain. However, when unnecessary medication is ingested, something happens to the serotonin levels which permits the substance to lose its efficiency. Research has disclosed that serotonin levels are brought down when you take unwarranted pain medication and then they increase somewhat after the headaches gets better and you suspend taking the medication.

If prescription or over-the-counter drugs are taken regularly or in greater doses than recommended, this can lead to rebound headaches. In addition to sedatives and tranquillizers, other rebound-causing medicines include:

1. Caffeine-containing analgesics (Anacin, Excedrin, etc.). Caffeine, a basic component in many headache drugs, can allay migraine pain for the moment. However, taking prescription containing caffeine every day — as well as drinking caffeine-loaded beverages such as coffee or soft drinks — can lead to more recurring and acute headaches. If the headache gets worse when you stop using caffeine, the caffeine may be the root of some of your headaches.

2. Butalbital compounds (Fioricet, Fiorinal, Phrenilin, etc.); Isometheptene compounds (Duradrin, Midrin, etc.); Decongestants (Afrin, Dristan, Sudafed, Tylenol Sinus, etc.); Ergotamines (D.II.E. 45, Ergomar, Migranal, Wigraine); Triptans (Amerge, Axert, Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig); Opioids and related drugs (Darvocet, OxyContin, Percocet, Tylenol with codeine, etc.). Medications that include any form of codeine, such as Percocet, Tylenol 3, or Vicodin, must be used with care because they can set off reliance at once.

Warning signs

* Your headache arises daily or almost daily (3 or 4 times a week).
* Your headache deviates in manner, area on the head, seriousness and power.
* You have a lower than normal threshold for pain.
* You begin to spot evidence of an increasing tolerance to the efficiency of analgesics over a period of time.
* You detect a spontaneous improvement of headache pain when you stop the medicines.
* You are considered a sufferer of a prime headache malady and you utilize prevention medication frequently and in large quantities.
* Even the slightest physical movement or bare minimum of logical expenditure kicks off the onset of the headache.
* Your headache is accompanied by any of these signs: fretfulness, depression, struggle in focusing, bad temper, memory problems, queasiness, and agitation.
* You put up with withdrawal indicators when you quickly are taken off the prescriptions.

Healing

If you have rebound headaches due to the overuse of medications, the only way to pull through is to  taking the drugs. If it is caffeine that is causing your rebound headaches, reducing your use may be of help. Before choosing on whether you want to cease abruptly or gradually, the following need to be considered:

1. Make sure you consult with a medical doctor before withdrawing from headache drugs. Specific non-headache medicines, such as anti-anxiety drugs or beta-blockers, require continuing withdrawal.

2. The patient (you) may need to be hospitalized if the warning signs do not respond to therapy, or if they produce grave nausea and vomiting.

3. During the first few days, alternative prescriptions may be handed out. Examples of prescribed drugs that may be used include corticosteroids, dihydroergotamine (with or without metoclopramide), NSAIDs (in mild instances) or valproate.

4. Whatever way you choose, when ceasing your medication, you will go through a time of worsening headache afterwards. Most people will feel better within 2 weeks, however, headache warning signs can continue for as long as 4 months and in some exceptional circumstances even longer.

Good News

Many patients go through long-term relief from all headaches afterward. The conclusion of one research exposed that greater than 80% of patients considerably got stronger 4 months after withdrawal.

Natural Migraine Treatments.05The Truth Behind Kids and Migraines

Children get migraines too. This is not a condition confined to adulthood.  Studies have even recounted that infants may develop migraines, but this is tough to confirm.

Existing calculations indicate that up to 10% of children between 5-15 years old suffer from  migraines, increasing to 28% in the 15-19 age range.  Migraine headaches have  a valid effect on the quality of life for children.  The high percentage of youngsters that undergo migraines makes them a foremost childhood health crisis.

Spotting children’s migraine is comparable to analysing adult migraines with a few significant exceptions.  The International Headache Society’s criteria states that the headache ought to last 4 to 72 hours. Children’s migraines are commonly much quicker and this detail needs to be taken into account when attempting to analyse them.  Adult migraines are customarily one-sided, but children’s  commonly include pain on both sections of the head.  These headaches should not be dismissed just because they are not one-sided.

For a good number of  child migraineurs (people bearing with migraine headaches) the headaches commence between 5 and 11 years of age.  Prior to puberty, the figure of male and female youngsters with migraines is about identical.  Subsequent to puberty, girls are to a great extent more prone than boys are to experience migraines, most probably due to  comparable hormonal issues that make the number of adult women migraineurs three times more than that of the men.

Lots of child migraineurs are fortunate enough to have their condition go away during puberty or upon reaching adulthood.  However, people who have migraines as children are much more probable to become adult migraineurs than those who did not have them as a young person.

Adult migraine sufferers should pay attention to migraine signs in their youngsters, especially if the other parent also puts up with migraines.  A young person with two migraineur parents has a 70% chance of becoming someone who sufferers with children’s migraines too

Neuro stimOne out of every eight people experiences migraine headaches. There is at present no cure on hand to eliminate the condition; specialists only help patients cope with the indications.  A new cure is being investigated that may supply further pain relief than any other means to date for migraine sufferers.

In September 2006, reviews began surfacing about a surgical procedure that may aid migraineurs.  Dr. Sandeep Amin, an anesthesiologist at Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago, Illinois, is breaking new ground with a radical new cure.

Dr. Amin is examining the potential of a remedy he calls “occipital nerve stimulation”.  The treatment calls for the embedding of a minute neurostimulator in the neck.  This device gives off electrical impulses to nerves underneath the skin at the base of the head at the back of the neck.

The device being employed by Dr. Amin nationwide is the Boston Scientific Precision neurostimulator.  The Precision neurostimulator is the littlest rechargeable, implantable neurostimulator on the market (as of 2006) and is already FDA-approved for spinal stimulation for returning pain therapy.

If the research is successful, it supplies new hope to migraineurs, mostly those who have found their pain opposing presently accessible remedy modalities.

Dr. Amin’s examination is not the first.  In 2004, Medtronic, Inc., a medical technology company, performed  an examination of occipital nerve stimulation for migraines using one of their own devices.  The examination was started after a Dallas doctor successfully used the untried cure to mitigate pain for a migraineur.   An evaluation of the company’s website, www.medtronic.com, exposed no information on the investigation, making it plausible that, for whatever grounds, the 2004 study was unsuccessful.

Dr. Amin says that his cure is not for everyone, and, if it is successful, suggests it only for patients who have been unable to obtain Migraine pain relief by way of prescription or other, more common remedy methods.

natural migraine treatment for childrenNon-Drug Treatment for Child Migraines

The last thing most parents want to do is give their child a drug.  Yet, when that child is a migraineur (a person with recurring migraine headaches), as are a reported 10-28% of children under the age of 19, many think they have no choice.

This is simply not right.  In fact, the majority of pediatric neurology experts will advise alternate remedies before drugs for safety reasons.  Many non-drug treatments are accessible for child migraine sufferers.  As with any complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) treatment, the patient’s specialist should be a part of the unit formulating the assessments and overseeing care.

One of the most regular non-drug therapy substitute is temperature therapy.  The employment of a warm or cool compress mitigates pain for many.  Rest the hot or cold pack to the section of the most extreme pain, taking care to insulate it so no harm to the child’s skin arises.

Sleep typically mitigates the suffering of adult migraineurs.  The length of children’s migraines is commonly shorter than that of an adult.  A catnap taken in a shady, peaceful corner can get rid of some migraines altogether.

Scheduling can be an aspect in minimizing the regularity of child migraines.  Unlike adults, who suffer stress in  an intense, periodic manner, children ordinarily experience a steady stress level, particularly during the school year.  Launching a regular routine, plus time to rest and an age-suitable sleep timetable, aids many youthful migraineurs.

Relaxation training, together with education in self-hypnosis and guided imagery, is becoming the remedy  alternative for frequent pediatric migraines.  Examinations on the topic confirm that over half of the pediatric patients who learn these relaxation approaches go through less frequent migraines, but with no lessening in pain intensity when they do have one.

There are scores of options for child migraine treatment, do not be frightened to ask the specialist about drug substitutes. Here is a good read of migraine symptoms in children
