migraine picture_112709Do you sometimes feel like a ton of bricks is weighing you down? Like a heavy ball and chain is tied to your feet you just want to stay under the sheets? Headaches, migraines, aches, pains and other sensitivities are more common than before? Well, the answer may lie in your diet and lifestyle.

Detoxification is but one of many natural cures to remedy migraine and other disorders.

Ever heard of detox?

Your body is an amazing and incredible highway of different systems that work together to nurture, nourish and protect it.  One such system is system is the detox system – composed of the digestive tract, the urinary system and the liver.  Everyday, you consume processed food and beverage containing chemicals that are harmful to your body.  Moreover, bad habits like smoking and drinking and environmental factors, such as pollution, pose a threat to your health.  Detoxification is an alternative treatment for migraines and other ills that is afflicting you.

How do I detoxify?

  • Avoid or limit going to clubs, bars and fast food restaurants
  • Drink a lot of water to prevent dehydration
  • Take milk thistle to benefit from its silymarin content, which safeguards the liver from harm
  • Avoid migraine food triggers (i.e. caffeine, cheese, MSG, processed meat, nuts, etc.)
  • Drink tea with soothing herbs, like slippery elm, everyday
  • Have small sips of hot water in 15-minute intervals for 2 weeks

What happens in detoxification?

  • Detox diets are believed to avert chronic diseases
  • Reduced occurrence of toxicity indicators (i.e. headaches, fatigue, irritability, anxiety and pain)
  • Detox diets may be suggested to supplement a monitored treatment regimen for recurring illnesses

Just like any drainage, your body’s systems get clogged every once in a while.  This congestion throws your body to an imbalance which leads ailments, such as migraines and headaches. Instead of reaching for pill bottles, try natural methods of remedying migraines and other illnesses.  Cleanse your system!  Take care of your body and it will take care of you.

migraine picture_112809More and more migraineurs (migraine sufferers) now prefer natural migraine remedies over their bottled counterparts.  It is not a surprise that prophylactic drugs designed to prevent migraines may result to a host of untoward side effects.  Moreover, some are not even effective at all!

One natural approach to migraine treatment is the practice of a healthy lifestyle.  Tweaking some bad habits may improve migraine by reducing the frequency and gravity of the attacks.   The suggestions below may just be that elusive cure for that throbbing pain.

Forty Winks

Migraineurs need to assess the amount of sleep their body needs.  They must ensure that they get ample shuteye for the work week, not too much and not too little either.  Sleeping in on weekends to make up for lost sleeping hours earlier in the week may set off a headache.

Sweat It Out

Working out in moderation is beneficial for everyone, even migraineurs.  Stress is a common migraine trigger.  Setting up a regular exercise regimen of 20-40 minutes for about three times weekly will significantly ease some of that tension.  Exercising will release the body’s natural painkillers called endorphins and will serve as an analgesic.

Stress Management

Life is peppered with stress here and there.  However, some moments are more intense than others.  Since stress is inescapable, learn how to deal with it.  During periods of high stress, inject some time for relaxation exercises, a good massage, moderate exercise, ample sleep and munching on a balanced diet.

Eating

Having a good breakfast is the best way to start the day, so eat up!  Migraineurs must have their meals regularly and at about the same time.  Do not miss a meal time.

Remember, consistency is key for the lifestyle changes to become an effective natural migraine cure.  These modifications need to be carried out every day of the week, regardless of holidays and other festivities.  Discipline and focus are needed to achieve consistency.  Don’t look at the long road ahead. Take it one day at a time.  You’ll eventually get there.

yoga2-main_FullYoga is a form of exercise involving physical and psychological discipline which has its roots in India.  Hatha Yoga is most popularly practiced in the West.   This type focuses on asanas (postures), meditation and pranayama (breathing).  Stress and fatigue are usual factors that set off migraines.

Yoga is an exceptional way to rid your system of this migraine trigger.  Not only is this a wonderful way of improving your overall health, it’s also a good method to lessen the occurrence and gravity of those headaches.  Yoga is the ray of hope for migraine sufferers who want fewer headaches through natural migraine treatments, plus, a toned body on the side.

Before taking on any workout regimen, always consult your doctor.  Watching videos and reading books are excellent ways to familiarise yourself with yoga.  It is highly recommended to discuss your concerns with an expert yoga instructor.  They will be in a better position to advise on what poses are suitable migraine remedies for you.  Better yet, grab a copy of their book – if they have one – and go over it with them.

The internet opens a wealth of resources.  If you just don’t have the extra buck to burn on yoga classes and other paraphernalia, go online for free yoga materials, instructions, exercises and other supplemental natural cures for migraines.  Look for websites or articles with illustrations of the poses to better guide you through the workouts.  For video instructions, watch the whole routine first to gain familiarity on the exercises.

This is a good opportunity for self-assessment, to see firsthand the degree of difficulty of the regimen and if you think you can actually hack it.  Remember, don’t push yourself too hard, especially if it’s your first attempt at working out.  Give your body time to adjust.  It’s definitely worth the wait.

migraine picture_112609For some people, a cup of coffee marks the beginning of the day.  But did you know that it also serves as a migraine trigger for an equal number of people?  One would think, put an end to the caffeine and you put an end to the headaches, right? Wrong.

The relationship of coffee and migraine is more complex than meets the eye.  It’s particularly difficult if the migraineur (migraine sufferer) realises that the caffeine is bringing on the migraines.  Putting the brakes on coffee drinking is not the answer.  Heavy caffeine consumers usually suffer from withdrawal headaches if they don’t have their regular daily dose.  Gradual withdrawal is the way to go.

Slowly reducing caffeine consumption will avoid sending your body into a tailspin withdrawal.  Identifying migraine triggers in your diet is an effective natural migraine remedy. Do it little by little until it’s eliminated entirely from your menu.

But why do many pain relievers contain caffeine?  Caffeine has vasoconstrictive properties that help ease the aches in some migraineurs.  During a migraine attack, the arteries of the temple become inflamed or dilated.  One theory contends that the vasoconstriction effect of caffeine reduces the swelling.  On the other hand, some assert that caffeine supplements the main analgesic.  Researches have indicated that combining most analgesics with caffeine makes it more potent for migraine treatment.  However, it didn’t indicate exactly why that was so.

As mentioned earlier, avoiding triggers is a natural way of treating migraines.  How do you do that?  Read the labels!  Caffeine may be in foods and drinks you don’t expect.  Obvious choices are – of course – sodas and coffee, but they’re also in fruit-flavoured sodas, chocolates (with the darker ones containing more caffeine) and readily available analgesics.  Care must be exercised with these over-the-counter pain relievers and other medications as they aren’t always distinctly labelled. Apply the same caution with natural migraine cures.  Doing some research will help go a long way.

migraine picture_112409The slightest indication of an impending migraine makes one pop a pill or concoct a natural migraine cure.  Awareness of how painful the attacks can get brings apprehension due to its incapacitating effects to the working man.  Migraineurs (migraine sufferers) are five times more inclined to experience clinical depression than those who are not.  As such, it is not surprising that depressed individuals are three time more probable to be migraineurs.

The main contention with the relationship of migraine and depression is similar to the chicken or egg scenario, which does come first?  Is one necessarily the effect of the other? There is an interesting common denominator between migraines and depression; they are both neurotransmitter deficiencies of the brain.  A noteworthy sidelight is how insomnia fits into the picture.  Migraine and depression sufferers find difficulty as well in getting some shuteye.  Insomnia is another brain neurotransmitter disorder.

Physicians are of the opinion that while migraine and depression are correlated, each has a different trigger with a similar neurobiology.  For a long time, experts lay the blame on depression on why migraineurs lost the quality of their lives.  But now, the connection seems to be leaning more on the biological mechanism rather than psychology.

A major concern for clinically depressed migraineurs is the drug interaction of the depression and migraine medications.  This is why some prefer natural migraine remedies over prescription drugs.  The FDA acknowledged that danger in July 2006.  Combining triptans used for migraines with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) or Serotinin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) used for depression may result in a condition known as serotonin syndrome.  This is a state where the body has excessive serotonin levels exhibited by the following symptoms:

  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Hallucinations
  • Rapid movement in blood pressure
  • Faster heart rate
  • Higher body temperature

It is important for depressed migraineurs to discuss their options with a trusted doctor to prevent serotonin syndrome.  Discuss other alternatives, such as natural migraine treatments, to remedy your pains.

migraine picture_112309Sickness, diseases, ailments, illnesses – whatever you want to call it – has been with humans since the beginning of time.  From simple headaches to sore muscles to a tummy ache, man has managed to cure what ails them.  Before the age of modern medicine, people relied on the natural remedies that surround them.  Until now, we still reap the benefits of these natural wonders.  Migraine is one such condition that can gain from the curative effects of these natural migraine treatments.

BAY can be taken immediately as the symptoms of a migraine pain emerge.  It is an important herb as it may avert a migraine.

FEVERFEW is one of the more successful natural migraine remedies around with a batting average of 70% for its efficacy in pain relief.   Capsules may be taken as recommended or prescribed.  Alternatively, you may place feverfew or mixed it up with some bay leaves in hot, NOT boiling, water and drink as tea.  This isn’t advised for pregnant or nursing women.

BUTTERBUR (Petasites hybridus) is an herb indigenous to Asia and Europe.  A recent study has reported that it has been effective in cutting migraine occurrence by more than two-thirds.

CAYENNE is likewise an effective natural medicine in foiling migraine attacks.

LAVENDER OIL is efficacious for recurrent headaches.  Put the recommended amount in a diffuser and place it in the room where the migraine sufferer will sleep in.  The scent will hopefully ease the bothersome and throbbing pain.

GARLIC and ONION are some of the more delectable natural migraine cures.  These will decrease the clotting of the blood which results in migraines.

GINGKO is another anti-clotting herb that can ease migraine pains.

Natural migraine treatments are certainly worth a try.  It has worked for centuries; it hopefully will work its magic now.  Migraine cures are very relative; one cure is different for another. But there’s no harm in trying, right?

migraine picture_112109Exercise does the body good.  Generally, working out releases endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.  Not only is exercising a possible natural migraine remedy, it’s also free (that is, if you’re not enrolled in the gym!). But best of all, it will also improve your overall health.  For migraineurs or migraine sufferers, it may just do the trick.  On second thought, it may not.  Migraine varies immensely from person to person that what might remedy some may be a trigger for others.

A new study has shown that a particular exercise program has demonstrated promising results in reducing the headache frequency and enhancing the quality of life.  The study followed the progress of migraineur subjects before, during and after the aerobic exercise.  The regimen involved indoor cycling which was geared towards the improvement of maximal oxygen uptake without exacerbating the migraine.

After the workouts, the patients’ maximum oxygen uptake rose dramatically.  Moreover, the migraine pains of the participants have not deteriorated during the observation period.  But more importantly, there was a remarkable decline in the number of migraine episodes, the number of days with migraines per month, headache severity and the quantity of headache medications used.  Migraineurs are commonly and understandably less active than those with the good fortune of not being one.  As a result, their bodies have less aerobic stamina and flexibility.

This is just the start; there is a long way to go.  More studies have to be conducted in order to establish the optimal amount of exercise needed by migraineurs.  The research conducted above may be further evaluated against pharmacological and non-pharmacological remedies to assess if working out can thwart off migraines.  While doctors and other professionals are continually researching for the ultimate migraine cure, whether through natural remedies or otherwise, continue to discover what will give you that much desired respite from pain.  This is a personal journey that will definitely be worth your every effort.

migraine picture_112209Transformed migraines (TM) is a migraine condition that starts out as episodic attacks but later resurfaces into more frequent occurrences until it arises daily or almost everyday.

People with TM usually share common attributes, such as:

A history of episodic migraine that can be traced back to their teen years or twenties

Majority are women, where 90% of whom have a record of migraine with aura

Excessive medication intake

Some migraineurs or migraine sufferers may already have a TM but don’t know it yet.  To them, pain is pain and whether it’s TM or not, it’s all muddled up as one forgettable experience.  Here are some characteristics manifested by the transformation process:

Migraine episodes become more recurrent over a period of time (i.e. months or years)

The attacks come with less severe and infrequent sensitivity to sound (phonophobia), sensitivity to light (photophobia) and nausea

After the transformation comes the pain. But what does a full blown TM feel like when it strikes?  If you’ve exhibited some of these characteristics, you just might have it:

Having daily or almost daily headaches that appear to be a mix of migraine and tension-type headaches

The gravity of the pain decreases to mild to moderate

The nausea, phonophobia or photophobia doesn’t necessarily have to accompany the pain felt

Other migraine indicators may linger, such as, gastrointestinal problems, unilateral or one sided pain and exacerbation of the pain caused by other migraine triggers

TM usually manifest a throbbing nature

Finding relief for TM remains to be of a complicated nature and requires a doctor’s attention.  Analgesic medicines should be restricted to avoid Medication Overuse Headache or MOH.  A healthy  lifestyle is recommended.  This includes ample sleep, balanced diet and regular exercise.  People with chronic migraines are typically depressed and anxious.  Work with a therapist to help improve your stress coping skills.  For preventive medication, anti-depressants and anti-convulsants are employed.  The goal of TM management is to transform the headaches back from everyday to intermittent attacks.

migraine picture_112009Hypnotherapy As a Migraine Solution is the process of bringing yourself in a trance-like state – one that resembles sleep – through suggestions to the mind.  Much to the surprise of some, this technique has been used by some migraine sufferers to eliminate the pain.

How could self-hypnosis do the trick?

Self-hypnosis enables the individual to tap into their subconscious mind, know the root of the negative emotions and later release the pain linked to the emotion.  This emotion is what may be giving you stress that sets off the migraine.

How do I do it?

  1. Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down.
  2. Close your eyes.
  3. Take several deep breaths.
  4. Focus on each inhale and exhale.
  5. The concentrated breathing exercise will bring a much lighter and calmer state.
  6. Envision a ray of white light go into your body from the top of your head.
  7. Allow the light to run throughout your body.
  8. Imagine the light cleansing your entire body of all the amassed anxiety and pain.
  9. Visualize that light departing from your body from the soles of your feet, bringing with it all the stocked up negative energy and emotions.
  10. You should be experiencing an exceptionally relaxed state of mind.
  11. Direct your attention on the body part that is hurting.
  12. Imagine that this ache is a huge red ball.
  13. Resume your deep breathing.
  14. Picture that the red ball is slowly getting smaller as you breathe out.
  15. Feel the ache dissipate with the ball’s size.
  16. Keep on performing this exercise until the ball vanishes.
  17. Together with the ball, so will your pain also disappear or be more tolerable.

You may want to record these instructions on tape as the pain may interfere with your concentration.  Allow 2-3 minutes interval for each step.  Practice makes perfect.  Keep on trying until you get it.  Just because this is a natural migraine remedy means it will be easy.

For people who who like to learn more about self-hypnosis, they can download a free ebook from Oxford Hypnotherapy at http://www.hypnos.info/pages/freeselfhypnosis.html.

migraine picture_111809Many people are averse to taking pharmacological formulations and prefer natural migraine treatments.   Reflexology is one alternative.  It involves massage techniques to alleviate aches and pains supported by the principle that every body part is connected to specific points on the hands and feet.

Rule out current medical ailments

There are primary and secondary causes for headaches. Primary causes are those that have no underlying illnesses that cause it.  Migraine headaches, tension headaches and cluster headaches fall under this category.  Secondary causes are those that result from medical ailments, such as traumas and brain illnesses.  The secondary causes have to be ruled out by a doctor through blood tests, CT scan, MRI and the like.

Know how the feet and hand points relate to the body

Your hands and feet are like maps that have corresponding connections to every part of your body.  Reflexologists apply different levels of pressure to specific points in order to ease pain and allay stress.   Pressure techniques employed are aimed at reflexes that lead to muscles in the neck, eyes, head and back.

Press the foot and toes to target the head, neck, back and brain

Apply firm pressure on the entire foot by squeezing it with both hands for 1-2 minutes.  Then, press the entire surface of each toe for a few seconds.  Repeat the process for all the toes.

Press the fingers to target the eyes, head and neck

The fingertips, likewise, map to certain points in the sinus, head and brain.  Squeeze each fingertip, thumb and the sides of the fingers firmly for several seconds.  Gently massage the entire length of the thumb and fingertips from top to bottom.

Drink water at the end of the reflexology treatment

Reflexology exercises discharge toxins in the body.  As such, drinking water after the session and all throughout the day will flush these out of your system.  Furthermore, the water will ease the body’s soreness brought about by the pressure applied to the hands and feet.

May this simple natural remedy help kick that migraine away!

migraine picture_111709Some migraineurs (migraine sufferers) have an understandable aversion in popping the pill for migraines.  Apart from denting the budget, one worries about its possible side effects.  Here are some natural migraine treatment suggestions for you.

Get Some Shut Eye

Sleep.  Lying down in a dark, quiet room can do wonders for migraine.  Relax your muscles and do some breathing exercises to calm your nerves.

Hot and Cold Treatment

The use of hot or cold depends on which one will ease the pain. Cooler temperatures works for some, while warmer conditions work best with others.  Try any of the following: (1) Put a cold compress or towel on your forehead or behind the neck; (2) Alternately apply warm and cold compresses; and (3) Soak your feet in warm water and place a cool towel on your forehead or head.

Massage

Have another person massage your neck, shoulders, face and back to relax your muscles.  You may also rub your temples in a slow, circular movement.

Acupressure

Here are some simple exercises you could try: (1) Apply a firm pressure on the area between the thumb and forefinger; (2) Press two fingers two inches apart on your neck at the base of the skull for two minutes and (3) Press firmly the area between the big toe and second toe for about one minute, then, do the same to the other foot.

Aromatherapy

Some scents found to ease migraine are Rosemary, Lavender, Jasmine and Peppermint.  These may be mixed with your bath or used with a massage.

Calcium

Try taking Calcium between 1,000mg to 2,000mg to thwart a migraine attack.

Magnesium

Eat foods rich in this mineral, such as nuts, halibut, oatmeal, pumpkin seeds and spinach.

Ginger

Combine one-half teaspoon of fresh ginger with warm water.

Feverfew

Consume about 250mg of this herb everyday.

Complex Carbohydrates

Try eating unpeeled potatoes, wheat crackers and the like to prevent migraines.  However, these may be a trigger for some.

Caffeine

Again, this might be a trigger for some. But if not, try a cup or two of strong coffee when a migraine is impending.
